Myles Zhang, a Columbia University student, has created an animated map that chronicles the development of New York City’s street grid and infrastructure system from 1609 to present day.

The program’s creators say that once perfected, the animated map offers residents and government planners a powerful tool that could help manage the region’s suburban sprawl.
