It's been a long wait, but it's finally here: Oracle announced today the general availability of Java SE 9, the Java Platform Enterprise Edition 8 and the Java EE 8 Software Development Kit.

The Eclipse Foundation has announced the release of the Jakarta EE 8, the first truly open-source, vendor-neutral version of Java Enterprise Edition.

Oracle has shipped Java 9 and Java EE 8, including support for modularity in Java 9 and a host of other features in both specifications to simplify development.

Oracle said this week it plans to transfer management of the Java EE project to an open-source foundation, such as Apache or Eclipse.

With the finalization of the Java EE 8 platform on the horizon, Oracle on Thursday said it's considering moving Java Enterprise Edition technologies to an open source foundation.
