By roughly 70,000 to 80,000 feet the sky is already very dark, and by around 100,000 feet it appears essentially black. The reason is simple physics. As altitude increases, the air thins rapidly, so there are far fewer molecules to scatter sunlight toward the camera. With Rayleigh scattering greatly reduced, the sky loses its blue and space reveals itself as a black backdrop.
