After his repeated aim at the British Prime Minister, Donald Trump mocked Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte during NATO criticism.
Macron, who held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, said they both believe in international law, the international order and the democratic values, adding: “This is why ... we both advocate for a return to peace, a ceasefire, calm, and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
An exchange between the two leaders this week was the latest sign that trans-Atlantic ties are souring over the Iran war.
For many people, it immediately brought back memories of the footage that sent Macron and Brigitte hurtling into headlines last year, after a brief exchange between the couple as they arrived in Vietnam, leading to her allegedly slapping the French president’s face. It did not take long for that big 2025 moment to snowball either.
