In August, Northern Hemisphere vegetation ate its final big meal of carbon dioxide for the year, which is why CO2 levels appear lower (yellow) in NASA's Earth Now interactive. Higher CO2 levels return to the Northern Hemisphere during the rest of the year, such as when vegetation goes dormant beginning in the fall and into winter.
